Shield'sUP!

Now You See Me, Now You Don’t Scary as it may sound, somewhere in the world some computer hacker is sitting in front of his computer scanning the Internet looking for any computer answering the knock on the door. A good firewall, whether hardware or software, should make your computer invisible to the outside world. But where do you go to test your system Internet security? Gibson Research Corporation is one of the best locations on the Internet for finding this and other helpful utilities. GRC is best known for it’s highly successful product SpinRite (currently at version 6.0) which does hard drive data recovery and maintenance. In fact, it’s become one of my favorite disk utilities because it has helped me recover data from hard drives I thought was lost forever. The great thing about Shield’sUP! (browse to http://www.grc.com/default.htm and click the Shield’sUP! link located toward the bottom of the page) is it only takes about a minute to run a complete test of the most commonly used computer ports and gives a summary of possible system threats. Furthermore, the site gives helpful suggestions and how to’s for securing your computer on the Internet. Take a minute and visit this site. It’s an eye opening experience.
